Module 4 of 4
Circular Economies
What a Bitcoin circular economy is, where they exist today, and how to build one in your community.
A circular economy is a community where bitcoin circulates between participants without returning to fiat. You earn bitcoin from your employer. You spend it at a local merchant. The merchant pays their supplier in bitcoin. The supplier pays their workers. The loop closes without anyone converting to dollars, pounds, or euros.
This is the end state Satoshi described: a peer-to-peer electronic cash system in active daily use. It is not theoretical. It is happening today, in specific places, at small but growing scale.
Where Circular Economies Exist
Bitcoin Beach (El Zonte, El Salvador)
Bitcoin Beach began in 2019 as a community project in El Zonte, a small surf town on the coast of El Salvador. An anonymous donor provided bitcoin to fund the project on the condition that it be used to build a circular economy — not converted to dollars. Local merchants, from pupusa vendors to surf shops, began accepting Lightning payments. Workers were paid in sats. By 2021, the project had attracted enough attention that El Salvador adopted bitcoin as legal tender nationally.
Bitcoin Jungle (Costa Rica)
Bitcoin Jungle is a similar project in the town of Uvita, Costa Rica. Local businesses accept Lightning payments, workers receive bitcoin wages, and the community uses a shared Lightning node infrastructure. The project demonstrates that circular economies can develop organically in communities where the participants see direct benefit.
Bitcoin Ekasi (South Africa)
Bitcoin Ekasi operates in Mossel Bay, South Africa, focusing on township communities where access to traditional banking is limited. Bitcoin and Lightning provide a payment infrastructure that does not require a bank account, a credit history, or government identification.
How to Start One
You do not need a grant or a foundation to build a circular economy. You need a small group of people who are willing to transact with each other in bitcoin. The minimum viable circular economy is three participants: someone who earns bitcoin, someone who sells goods or services for bitcoin, and someone who supplies those goods and accepts bitcoin in turn.
- Start with what you already do. If you are a freelancer, offer bitcoin payment to your clients. If you run a shop, add a Lightning QR code to your counter.
- Find one other person. A friend, a neighbour, a local business owner. Help them set up a Lightning wallet. Make your first transaction between you.
- Expand gradually. Each new participant makes the economy more useful for everyone already in it. Network effects apply to money just as they apply to communications networks.
- Use BTCPay Server for merchants. It is free, open-source, and removes the need for any payment processor.
Why This Matters
Every transaction that settles in bitcoin rather than through the banking system is a small but real reduction in dependence on fiat infrastructure. Individually, each transaction is trivial. Collectively, a circular economy demonstrates that bitcoin works as money — not as a speculative asset held on an exchange, but as a medium of exchange used by real people for real goods and services.
That is the transition. Not a single dramatic event, but the gradual, incremental replacement of one monetary system by another, transaction by transaction, community by community.
