Module 1 of 4

Getting Paid in Bitcoin

How to earn bitcoin directly — as an employee, freelancer, or business owner — without going through an exchange.

The most direct path to a Bitcoin standard is to earn bitcoin rather than buy it. When you earn, you are not making an allocation decision about a speculative asset. You are receiving payment for value provided, denominated in a monetary unit you have chosen.

The psychological difference is significant. Buying feels like investing. Earning feels like working. The Bitcoin standard is about work, not investment.

For Employees

A growing number of companies offer partial or full salary payment in bitcoin. If your employer does not yet offer this, the conversation is simpler than most people expect. You are not asking for a raise. You are asking for a portion of your existing compensation to be settled in a different currency.

Services like Bitwage act as intermediaries: your employer pays Bitwage in their local currency, and Bitwage converts and sends bitcoin to your wallet. Your employer's payroll process does not change. Your pay arrives in sats.

Start small — 5% or 10% of your salary. The amount matters less than the habit. Once you are receiving regular income in bitcoin, your mental accounting shifts naturally.

For Freelancers and Contractors

Freelancers have the simplest path. You set your rate. You choose your payment method. Adding a bitcoin payment option requires nothing more than generating an invoice with a Lightning payment request or an on-chain address.

BTCPay Server is the standard tool. It is free, open-source, and can be self-hosted or run through a hosting provider. It generates payment requests, tracks incoming payments, and records settlement details for accounting. No third party touches the funds.

Offer a small discount — 3% to 5% — for bitcoin settlement. This reflects the real savings: no credit card fees, no chargeback risk, no payment processor taking a cut. The discount costs you less than the fees you avoid.

For Business Owners

If you run a business that sells goods or services, accepting bitcoin is an extension of the freelancer model. BTCPay Server integrates with most e-commerce platforms. For physical retail, a tablet or phone running BTCPay's point-of-sale interface generates QR codes for Lightning payment. Settlement is instant.

The decision that matters is not how to accept bitcoin — that is technically simple. The decision that matters is what to do with it afterwards. Hold it as reserves, or convert to fiat for operating expenses. On a Bitcoin standard, the default is to hold. You convert to fiat only as much as you need to cover fiat-denominated obligations.

Building the Habit

The first sats you earn will feel different from the first sats you buy. They represent your time, your skill, your labour — denominated in a monetary unit that cannot be debased. That feeling is the beginning of the transition. Everything that follows — spending in bitcoin, saving in bitcoin, planning in bitcoin — builds on it.
